Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the largest conservation area in Kenya .Game viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent all year around thanks to the diverse population of resident game.

Weather: On average, the warmest month(s) are February and March. Most rainfall (rainy season) is seen in April, May and August. Masai Mara has dry periods in January and February. On average, the warmest month is March, the coolest month is January, April is the wettest month. This month should be avoided if you don’t like too much rain, January is the driest month.

Amboseli National Reserve

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of the world’s largest national parks, covering 4% of Kenya. Tsavo National Park is so close to Mombasa (less than 100 km), making it an ideal destination for anyone wanting to combine the thrill of a safari with some relaxing beach time.

Weather: The average temperature fluctuates between 31°C/88°F during the day and 20°C/68°F at nighttime. Tsavo East has a wide variation in altitude: from 171 to 845m (561 to 2,772ft). Temperatures drop by about 6.5°C for every 1,000m you climb (or 3.5°F per 1,000ft), so there are significant climatic differences within the park itself. Rainfall peaks in April and November during the long and short rains, respectively. Rain tends to fall as short heavy showers.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1,754 m above sea level. Initially established as a bird sanctuary, the parks careful management and re-introduction program has since ensured a thriving mammal fauna which includes some of Kenya’s most rare species.

Lamu Island

Samburu, Buffalo Springs.

Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves are located at the arid fringes of Kenya’s vast Northern Frontier District. This rugged and dramatic landscape is home to the Samburu people.

Weather: The average daytime temperature is 32°C/90°F, while the average nighttime temperature is 16°C/61°F. It is advisable to take warm clothing for early morning game drives. The annual rainfall is low, but peaks in April and November. The ‘long rains’ are generally expected from mid-March to mid-May, and the ‘short rains’ from mid-October to mid-December. Rain tends to fall as short, heavy showers, which are widely scattered.

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru County, which lies north west of Nairobi. This stunning place in the heart of Kenya is also popular because it has hotels and camps in almost every part of the town.

Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital city. The word Nairobi derives from a water hole known in Maasai (an Eastern Nilotic language) as Enkare Nyirobi, which means “cool waters.” Nairobi, which was a swamp area, was founded in 1899 and was first a railway camp for the Uganda Railway. In addition to its urban core, the city has Nairobi National Park, a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to giraffes, zebras and lions.

Weather: February is the hottest month in Nairobi with an average temperature of 21°C (69°F) and the coldest is July at17°C (62°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 9 in February. The wettest month is April with an average of 130mm of rain.

Mombasa

Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya, is located on Mombasa Island. It is regarded by many as the exotic paradise in the African tropics.

The wettest month is May with an average of 260mm of rain. The best month to swim in the sea is in March when the average sea temperature is 30°C(86°F).

Malindi

Malindi, the country’s second-largest coastal town, is 120 km (75 miles) north of Mombasa and has been an important port in Kenya. With its sandy beaches and gorgeous sites Malindi is one of Kenya’s popular holiday resorts.

Mount Kenya National Park

Mount Kenya National Park was established in 1949 to protect Mount Kenya, the wildlife and surrounding environment, which forms a habitat of a large number of wild animals.

Weather: In January the daily average maximum temperatures is 26°C with the average minimum 14°C, while in June the average maximum is 24°C with a minimum of 13°C. The wettest month is November with an average of 151.0mm of precipitation falling while the driest month is July with 14.5mm falling.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park lies south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya, north west of Nairobi. Once a prehistoric lake, the Hell’s Gate National Park is now remarkable for its unique landscape and the diverse wildlife that calls this small park home.

Weather: Hell’s Gate offers reasonable wildlife viewing throughout the year, but the rains might interfere with your activities during the main Wet season months (March, April and May).
